Born to Vietnamese parents and raised in Hackney, DJ Neptizzle, aka Michael Hung Nguyen, has always loved music. He started his life on decks playing grime records, whilst studying music from GCSE level through to university. But it was after being asked to play Afrobeats at a close friend’s graduation party that his love affair with the genre began. With just one Ghanaian Hip-life CD to work with he picked up the African beats really quickly.
Inspired by the stalwart DJs in the Ghanaian club scene such as French Kiss, Mos Camp & Big L, DJ Neptizzle quickly picked up the necessary skills to rise up and become one of the leading DJ’s in the Afrobeats scene.
“To do what I do is a dream come true,” says a humbled Neptizzle. As DJ’s, we are all performers. We want to put a smile on people’s faces and we want to see people move. But I have to thank the music for my popularity because it is the music that has made me. I probably wouldn’t be as big as I am today if I specialized in a different genre. So big up Afrobeats. It’s made me who I am today.
Nothing holds this DJ back, not even the language barrier. “When I play Afrobeats, it’s the rhythm and the beat that carries me,” says the passionate DJ. “It’s hypnotic. I love the vibe and I feed off the energy of the crowd. There’s no party like an African party”.
DJ Neptizzle’s Ultimate Afrobeats Mix CD series, which started in 2010 constantly keeps fans up to date with new music and are highly rated by listeners as one of the best Afrobeats mix CD’s around.
It doesn’t stop there. Supported by Adidas, being a guest DJ Edu’s Destination Africa show on BBC1 Xtra, to a co host radio show in Ghana with Eddie Kadi, titled: The UK Chale Show; it was only a matter of time before major events and organisations such as: Coko Bar for the Wizkid Tour, Africa Unplugged to Africa Utopia at the prestigious South Bank Centre, brought him on board to play the upbeat and exciting genre.
The New Year for 2013 saw him back on the African continent- Victoria Island, Lagos, to play for Mavin Records Artiste Dr Sid and Don Jazzy himself. Jazzy, the prolific multiple award winning songwriter/producer and CEO of Mavin records was impressed with his skills and took to twitter to thank him.
DJ Neptizzle continues to leave an everlasting impression wherever he goes.
With an aim to continue to push the Afrobeats genre into the mainstream and to break barriers by changing the way people think about African music, DJ Neptizzle brings the best beats to clubs all over the world and this is just the beginning.
