Laura Mvula

Described as The voice of 2013 by The Evening Standard, the classically trained, singer songwriter’s music fuses orchestral soul with velvety harmonies and emotional vocals giving nods to Nina Simone, George Gershwin and Björk amongst others.

A graduate from the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition, the 26 year old is a unique collision of her Caribbean background and formal music.

There’s something special about this young lady from Birmingham. Laura’s debut single She, produced by Steve Brown (Rumer) and mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Adele), appeared out of nowhere almost overnight to huge praise from the cream of UK music critics, a track so lyrically poetic that it took on a life of its own.

Laura started writing songs on her laptop while working as a supply teacher in a Birmingham secondary school. Now, with some incredible live performances and a praised EP (She released 18th November) under her belt, 2013 looks set to be an incredible year for her.

As Clash Magazine say “Beautiful in voice and soul, lift your eyes skyward and watch this girl soar”.
