Dre Skull
Dre Skull is a Brooklyn-based producer and DJ whose boundary-pushing conceptual attitude towards music and culture has been receiving critical acclaim since 2007. His worldwide tours and collaborations with artists as far reaching as Beenie Man, Lil Scrappy, Popcaan and Vybz Kartel have established him as an ambassador of culture and a producer with a pop touch.
In 2009, Dre Skull founded Mixpak Records as an outpost for both his own productions and the work of other respected artists and producers from a variety of different scenes and cultures. Mixpak’s growing roster represents Dre Skull’s singular vision that connects dancehall and southern rap legends with unknown teenage techno producers and female rock bands.
Dre Skull’s background in the academic/underground art scene gives his aesthetic a fresh scope that distances him from his contemporaries. More a descendant of Steely Dan’s brainy conceptualism than that of a traditional DJ, his outsider status allows him to take risks and establish new dynamics, combining high conceptualism with pop accessibility. These dynamics run through both his own productions and the releases on Mixpak.
Dre Skull has been featured by magazines such as XLR8R, Clark, Fader, Tsugi, and Vanity Fair, produced singles that received strong radio support in Trinidad and charted in Jamaica and received strong support from artists like Annie Mac, Sinden, Switch, Drop the Lime, Diplo, Stretch Armstrong and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard. He continues to hone his craft and up the ante, with frequent recent trips to Kingston, Jamaica where he produced the critically acclaimed Vybz Kartel full length, Kingston Story, released in June 2011. Dre Skull’s future as a musical and cultural innovator keeps heating up.
