There is a constant tension in sports media between a sports event and athlete wishing to protect and monetise rights; and the need for the public to know about important events and people, both from a public interest 'right-to-know' news perspective (FIFA scandal, etc), and to provide the 'oxygen of publicity' to that sport or athlete.
