GiL Vargas (born in Bronx, New York) was raised by a mother who desired nothing more than to see her three sons grow in the knowledge and fear of the Lord. She pushed and encouraged her sons to read scripture and pray daily, attend service weekly and even set the stage for them to sing within their local church, not aware of the impact that it would have on GiL later on in his life. He began singing at the age of 5 performing frequently at church along with the choir. He also performed solo acts for special services, elderly homes and even in the streets. Although he never acquired professional training, he was equipped with a statement made by his mother that has never left his mind even
up until this very day, “You must connect with every lyric to truly show conviction and deliver the message as if your life depended on it.”
Although his mother did her best to guide and protect her sons, at the age of 18 GiL managed to escape the solitude she worked so hard to keep and began to pursue the desires of his flesh. His true colors became transparent as he continued to rebel against the very God his mother taught him about throughout most of his life. He realized that he only lived as he did to please his mother and not God, so naturally he gave his voice up to the devil and began to sing for sinful gain and pleasure.
It was around this time when he met a friend who would later become a close brother in Christ, Marrio Escobar. Marrio was also in high pursuit of achieving success as a hip-hop artist/producer during this time, so naturally the two of them united forces and began to make music together. Their unique sound consisting of a hip-hop artist and r&b singer along with original production eventually caught the ear of an independent record label out of Worcester MA. A two year contract with Straight Up Entertainment was signed by the two of them and the indulging of sin intensified.
Out of the kindness of His heart, the Lord saved Marrio and immediately began to use him as he proclaimed the Gospel of Christ to GiL. Although GiL refused to listen and continued to rebel, the Lord in His sovereignty had different plans for him. GiL states, “I realized that on my own, facing a holy and perfect God, only wrath would await me. The thought of Christ living a perfect life, a life that I could never live, to then die on the cross taking on the just punishment I deserve, to finally rising from the grave to show not even death has dominion over him completely crushed me. I repented of my sins and believed the finished work of Christ for the first time. Now as a believer I strive to learn more about my triune God and all his attributes. With my talents I will serve him until he returns. My music will never be created with the intention of pleasing ears. First and foremost my music will glorify God, challenge your understanding of God and ultimately expose the listener to God's word. I hope and pray that all who listen would be encouraged and edified.”
