Como Las Movies
Dancing your ass off to DJs spinning electro-cumbia rolas was the impetus behind Como Las Movies. Lacking turntable skills, Nelson Valente opted for writing and recording tunes on his Macbook. His vision: form a band showcasing instruments’ individual aspects yet add a cohesive layer of musicality focusing on the use of keys, bass, guitars, and percussion.
Valente diligently courted two Austin musicians possessing the much-needed and much-desired musical chops he sought: guitarist Joe Rocha and stand-up bassist Mincho Jacob. Shortly thereafter, accordianist Gerardo Arellano, drummer Joseph Loney, and singer/keyboardist/guitarist Tomas Olano-García joined. Now the electro-cumbias have come to life, out of Valente/s bedroom studio and onto the dance floor.
Recently, fans have been dancing and singing along to Como Las Movies performing at local clubs and Austin’s premiere Latino music festival, Pachanga Fest. Como Las Movies has shared the stage with a variety of bands, including Grupo Fantasma, Piñata Protest, and Munny Chicha.
Como Las Movies’ ability to capture electronic cumbia in a live setting piqued the interest of famed producer Adrian Quesada, who invited them to his studio to record and collaborate on a couple of singles "Feedback Cumbiero" and "Mermelada" . They will be released as a two-sided single this spring. See you guys at SXSW.
