Kayo Dot
KAYO DOT is a veteran psychedelic, avant-goth, metal-in-opposition band from New York City. They released their debut in 2003 on Tzadik, the label headed by avant-garde composer, saxophonist, and legend John Zorn. Since then, they have released six more albums on various forward-thinking independent labels such as Hydra Head and Robotic Empire, with their latest, HUBARDO, 100% self-released on Ice Level Music, the imprint founded by Kayo Dot frontman Toby Driver.
Kayo Dot's meticulously-composed music is impossible to pigeonhole - "Metal is inaccurate. Avant-garde too pretentious," stated PopMatters.com - every album takes a differing approach from the last, while consistently maintaining a dark, disorienting, dreamy, and overwhelming aesthetic. Combine the styles of artists as diverse as Bjork, Disembowelment, Olivier Messiaen, Blonde Redhead, Current 93, George Crumb, The Cure, and Emperor, and you'll begin to get an idea of Kayo Dot's sound. Their music has used a vast array of instrumentation beyond the typical rock band paradigm, including brass, woodwinds, strings, pitched percussion, and vintage analog synths, to create limitless combinations of colors and worlds-within-songs whose roads all lead to a place of total emotional annihilation.
