You Never Graduated: Social Media As High School

#sxsw #SXSWHS2014

Be popular. Don’t miss out on the party. Figure out what’s cool before it’s, well – not anymore. Social media today has the familiar symptoms of a high school classroom; but now, instead of obsessing over what our classmates think, it’s become our followers. From business professionals to cultural commentators and stand-up comedians, we all have a common goal of getting noticed and staying relevant. While our approach to social media went through its own learning curve, the window for experimentation is closing. Networks and channels are more aligned with real world ecosystems, but it’s the same high school dynamics and politics ruling the landscape. To thrive in the current social space, let’s reacquaint ourselves with the unwritten laws and social codes from high school. Our knowledge and individual experiences from the past can help us become more effective publishers today. Together, once we go back to school, our desired actions in social can become tangible results.

My name is Mea, and I am a creative storyteller. As a multi-disciplinary producer, I make content people desire to engage with in the digital space, social media, and beyond. Through my work with global advertising agencies, I’ve built innovative campaigns and strategic executions for clients including Microsoft, UNICEF, Cap’n Crunch, and more. During my time at Droga5, I co-lead the production of “Decode Jay-Z Powered By Bing”. Growing up in multiple cultures across the US, I got my start in customer service by working in my dad’s restaurant, and began my exploration of online communities in 1992 with my friend’s CompuServe account.
