Meta and X claim that the removal of content moderators in favour of community notes is a win for free speech and democracy. Yet words can be weapons, and we have seen how unmoderated misinformation and hate speech on those platforms has resulted in real world violence and increased marginalisation. Should we hold those who use hate speech to incite violence to account in the same way we hold the perpetrators of physical violence to account? Should the companies who allow hate speech also be accountable? Is social media really moving us toward freedom or toward division and hate?
