‘Immersive’ is a buzzword that is both unavoidable and hard to understand. It was originally developed to describe digital works possessing a 3D quality that suggests the fullness of real life. But as the digital economy claims more and more of our lives, non-virtual environments and experiences, such as art, theater and theme parks find themselves under pressure to assure the public that they too are immersive. In this fireside chat, Brendan McGetrick and Emilie Baltz will explore the opportunities and risks of immersive experiences and how they worked to expand the territory in their work at the Museum of the Future.
