Gender-bending narratives have long been used to help cis characters gain empathy or navigate societal norms inBooks, Movies, TV etc. Yet, when trans filmmakers take control of these stories, they become controversial. Why is transness accepted as a comedic tool for cis characters but resisted when told authentically by trans people? What can we learn from films like She’s The He, which plays with gender-bending and use of bathrooms, and where is trans cinema going?
