Reimagining public safety must include the enfranchisement of incarcerated people. Restoring voting rights inside prisons and jails ignites civic engagement, encourages a citizenship mindset, promotes self-advocacy, and helps those coming home acclimate. Empowering incarcerated people to vote creates a more informed, more conscious (and needless to say, more represented) community. Who better to fight for record expungement or banning the box than those who have experienced these legal blindspots? Recognizing the humanity of incarcerated people leaves everyone safer and freer.
