Chris Perez and his partner Michael Donaldson will be back for another lively (and surprisingly entertaining) update on the many legal developments affecting the indie film community.
The distribution landscape has changed enormously since last we were together at SXSW. The number of buyers in the indie film market seems to have contracted. The WGA and SAG strikes ground most productions to a complete halt. But it’s not all doom and gloom, as there are signs that independent filmmaking is alive and well.
Since last year, the Supreme Court has handled at least two major legal cases affecting independent filmmakers – the Warhol case involving fair use, and the other involving trademark law. This presentation will provide updates on the state of the law as it affects filmmakers today. Also, there will be a quick recap on how the so-called Small Claims Copyright Court is doing.
Bring all your burning questions, because these two leaders in the indie industry tend to stay on to help you learn more about anything you need to know.
Programming descriptions are generated by participants and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SXSW.
