Hierba Malita at Coconut Club
Luya (they/she), aka Hierba Malita, is a queer Houston-native open-format DJ based in Austin, Texas. They originally studied environmental engineering only to find themselves DJing underground music (non-popular, experimental, but GOOD shit aimed at relating to personal growths) on KVRX 91.7 FM, writing blogs, and teaching local youth how to screen print for a living. This eventually led them to play music publicly in clubs as Hierba Malita, mixing the old and new with genres ranging from Cumbia to Amapiano to UK Garage, R&B, House, Dembow, Bounce, Brazilian Funk, Hip-Hop, Jungle, Footwork, and more.
Now Luya is the founder of creative collective Flwrpot.co, where they interview other up-and-coming BIPOC creatives, host underground community events with live music and markets, and more to come.
There’s always something new! That’s a part of the growth.
