Doohickey Cubicle at Swan Dive Patio
Each moment of a Doohickey Cubicle song is built from the ground up by Francis Hooper and Alli Deleo — flying by on a cloud of fragments; intricate, brass-laden, relaxing and energizing in equal measure. But each swirl in their soundscape is as ornate as a big band jazz orchestra. ‘Super Smeller’, the lead single from their upcoming sophomore LP, begins simply, with a long droning bow. But it quickly breaks out into frantically skipping bass lines, rolling sax breaks, and cascades with organic and digital rhythms that continue to ornately pock the upcoming record - all on infectious melodies sitting somewhere on the beach between electric tropical nostalgia and hazy funk. Alli and Francis trade off lead vocals throughout the album, their downy voices peer through whispering synths in interweaving patterns like instruments themselves. The result is a soft wall of sound, bursting with ideas it can hardly contain but light enough that you can hold it in your hand like it doesn’t weigh a thing. Their new record comes out in September 2024, with their next single out this March.
