Film Production: Legal Essentials

Date TBA

Advance sign-up is required. Online sign up is now open on the SXSW Schedule for Workshops. You will only be able to RSVP for one of these formats in the given time slot. On each event page, select an available time slot to RSVP and it will be added to your personal schedule. There are a limited number of spots available per session, so RSVP today!

This workshop is designed to provide non-lawyers with a basic understanding of common legal issues encountered during a typical production cycle. We’ll talk about fair use and licenses, highlight the differences between copyright and trademark, walk through some first amendment concepts, and explore best practices for drafting contracts. Can you put that trademark in your film? Can you say something negative about a famous person? Can you use archival materials without permission? What are some key clauses that you should include in your agreements? The goal is to enable film principals to spot, address, and avoid common legal pitfalls. The workshop includes a Q&A session.

Programming descriptions are generated by participants and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SXSW.
