Medical culture is shaped by perfectionism. The myth of the physician-God who works endlessly, suppresses emotion, and operates without error has given rise to a widespread and debilitating culture of shame among healthcare workers, who suffer in silence. Physicians are enduring a crisis of burnout, depression, and trauma response that undermine safe patient care and threatens the healthcare workforce.
In this panel, filmmaker Sam Osborn speaks with 3 physicians who use storytelling to explore and dispel medicine’s shame culture: Dr. Emily Silverman, creator of medical storytelling organization The Nocturnists; Dr. Will Bynum, creator of The Shame in Medicine Project; and Dr. Gita Pensa, creator of Doctors and Litigation: The L Word, a podcast supporting physicians facing litigation.
