In this meetup we will be sharing the ways that private citizens have addressed public spaces. Governments have been offering pilots for years, things like open streets, outdoor eating space, markets, block parties, re-development of public squares, reclamation of underpasses. But what have people brought to public spaces to warrant these changes?
In Oakland, roller skating parties are hosted at parking lots and basketball courts. In San Juan, Bomba has been hosted under the city walls for generations. In Boston, pedicabbers are the city’s mischief makers and public space ambassadors.
These are examples of the de facto welcoming committees in our cities. Who are the stewards for public spaces in your city or town? Be prepared to share stories from your city/travels in this meetup.
