Annual Legal Update – Indie Film

Date TBA

Recording: Annual Legal Update – Indie Film, Date TBA

Michael Donaldson and his partner Chris Perez will be back for another lively (and surprisingly entertaining) update on the many legal developments affecting the indie film community.

The distribution landscape has changed enormously since last we were together at SXSW. Major changes at the streaming platform have people wondering whether we are going to see a downturn in the amount of independent films and series due to a lack of funding. Podcasts are gaining respect in the courts as well.

Additionally, a flood of recent cases concerning fair use -- especially in regard to photographs -- has sent the message that courts are continuing to be protective of filmmakers’ first amendment rights to tell their stories. And of course there is the case involving a photograph of Prince added by Warhol in a series of portraits. At this writing, the Supreme Court has not issued its opinion.

Bring all your burning questions, because these two leaders in the indie industry tend to stay on to help you learn more about anything you need to know.

Programming descriptions are generated by participants and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SXSW.
