Presented by SXSW Stands With Ukraine
SpivOberta
SpivOberta creates Ukrainian music.
Kyrylo Vakariev, Kyrylo Bavykin, and Illia Levchenko began creating original music and performing together in childhood in Dobropillia, in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.
Their early performances were interrupted and they were separated by conflict and war in their region in 2014. Even apart they continued to create music together. The process helped them define their identity as Ukrainian and musicians and to be true to themselves in the midst of the chaos and madness around them.
Reconnecting and renaming themselves SpivOberta, they came to the US as SXSW Showcase Artists in 2017 and 2018, sharing their new music with great success, presenting original songs and reimagining Ukrainian traditional music, combining folk motifs with modern sounds, using electronic samples and live instruments to create modern music.
Now living in Kyiv they are again faced with conflict and war. They are joined by vocalist Yuliia Nesterenko creating new music and again turning to their creative energies for salvation from the madness and chaos around them.
Experimenting with sounds and images from the reality of the war around them, they bring new music to SXSW.
