Rett Smith's musical path, like his entire life, was anything but typical. Growing up in a small New Mexico mountain town, Smith became a skiing prodigy and moved to Austria at age 12, where he lived and studied the sport until age 15. Five years later, while training and competing in Vail, Smith sustained an injury that took his life off course from everything he had worked towards. On a whim, he moved to New York City in 2007 and became immersed in Lower East Side culture, writing poetry and prose and teaching himself guitar. He began to pour the competitive spirit he had honed in skiing into music, determined to plot a new course. Though his sound evolved over time from singer/songwriter and Americana influences to the garage distortion rock on A Nightly Consequence, his new album out through Imperial Music March 10, the common theme is the element of darkness -- brooding, moody, sometimes biting vocals that seem to echo a howl from deep within.
