As our digital world moves off the web, what’s next for accessibility, equity, and inclusion? Thanks to skyrocketing sales of smart speakers and immersive headsets for our homebound lifestyles, technologists are rightfully contending with new demands when it comes to designing user experiences that are accessible and equitable beyond the website. Novel paradigms in voice and AR/VR raise important questions about multimodal accessibility, voice interfaces, and immersive experiences, challenging our preconceived notions of what it means to realize digital justice and equity. As marginalized communities migrate from the web to realms like chatbots and virtual reality, how can we work to mitigate systemic oppression for users of diverse lived experiences while moving our technology forward?
