Navigating the music industry as a woman is a unique challenge. Only 21% of musicians are women, only 12% of songwriters are women and only 2% of producers are women. This means that at any given time, in any given scenario, it’s more than likely that only one (or zero) women will be in the room, on the stage or at the table in the music industry. This panel conversation will center around efforts to close the gender gap in the music industry and help shine a spotlight on We are Moving the Needle, a nonprofit organization supporting all women recording industry professionals, including audio engineers and producers. As part of Record Store Day’s 15 th anniversary in 2022, Vans and Record Store Day are shining a spotlight on We Are Moving the Needle and the need for more women in the music business. They will also release an album featuring groundbreaking female artists that will benefit women-owned and operated independent record stores.
