Taiwan Beats
Last year, Taiwan Beats introduced different aspects of Taiwan through the combination of artists and spectacular backdrops. For the SXSW showcase 2022, six groups of artists play at six cultural venues.
Sorry Youth starts the showcase with a heavy guitar riff, leading the way to a traditional opera stage once owned by one of the five prominent Taiwanese families. They are followed by DJ QuestionMark. The DJ/flutist puts out enormous energy with rhythmic beats, creating one unconventional Electric Flower Car ride. Chuang Mei Theater is one of the oldest movie theaters in Taiwan still screening films. Here, Olivia Tsao gently sings about the food stands and historical monuments nearby as her voice echoes through the theater hall. Afterwards, the psychedelic duo Mong Tong will guide you to the underground lair of Taiwan’s most mysterious electronic music scenes. As the night gets deeper, Sleeping Brain’s cold and aloof beat resonates in a multi-functional venue centered at the heart of Tiaotong Business District, where the nightlife never ceases. Last comes Elephant Gym, the instrumental trio, with their adept skill and playful hooks performing at the Kaohsiung port.
