AJ, the One
Hailing from Inglewood, CA, AJ, the One
embodies the city’s cultural duality: raised
in the avenues and rooted in the
matriarchal powers that hold them afloat.
AJ gained global notoriety in 2019 as one
of thirty contestants on Netflix’s Rhythm +
Flow. AJ showcased herself as a raw
lyricist, fashion-forward figure, and bold
performance artist with a motive -- and the
right melody to pair it with.
AJ, the One layers provocative metaphors,
radical eroticism, and hood activism to
stimulate the physical body, inner spirit,
and mental consciousness. During her
matriculation through UC Berkeley, AJ
presented a TEDx talk on Women in
Music: A Reclamation of Sexuality where
she cited her own music career as
research into the topic.
In light of Breonna Taylor’s tragic passing,
AJ released Real in the Field EP, which
speaks to the position Black women hold in
the American playing field. AJ, the One’s
self-directed music videos Sugar Cane & 24
are visual explorations into the uncharted
world of a queer Black woman from inner city
LA.
As opening act for music stars E-40, Willow
Smith, Smino, and Rico Nasty, AJ, the One is
fueled by collaborative art. AJ is a thought
leader uses music as a tool t
