Sixteen Deluxe
Sixteen Deluxe is a psychedelic noise-pop band from Austin, TX, notorious for their energetic, deafening live performances and lysergic studio creations. Formed in 1994, they quickly rose to the top of the buzz band heap in Austin. From 1995-2000, the band released three full-length LPs, working with renowned producers John Croslin (GBV, The Reivers), Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail of Dead), and Keith Cleversley (Flaming Lips). After gaining MTV attention with their 1995 single, “Idea”, the band journeyed from indie labels (Austin’s fabled Trance Syndicate) to majors (Warner Bros.) and back again throughout the 90’s, before disbanding in July 2000. The band reunited in 2010 for a series of benefit gigs; at SXSW 2012, they were inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame, and took part in Grulkefest, a public memorial and celebration of the life of SXSW’s Brent Grulke. In 2020, noise-pop aficionados rediscovered the band’s seminal debut album, Backfeed Magnetbabe, which the band self-released on vinyl to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Sixteen Deluxe are slated to record new material in 2022 at Grammy-nominated guitarist/vocalist/producer Chris “Frenchie” Smith’s studio, The Bubble.
