Maylee Todd
Maylee Todd is a dynamic Canadian multimedia artist, musician and curator based in Los Angeles. Her creativity derives from a wide range of artistic disciplines: songwriting, production, performance art, dance, 3-D projection mapping, and curation. Maloo, full of "science fiction lullabies" is her fourth studio album, and her first for Stones Throw.
The album is named after Maylee Todd’s digital avatar, MALOO. Throughout the pandemic, Maylee spent a lot of time in VR, and started thinking about the utopian possibilities of the technology. “Often we place too much emphasis on status, wealth, and clout on social media,” she says. “Instead, what if we find ways to share our dreams and goals for ourselves and society? Tapping into our creativity and imaginations rather than having to preserve status or identity for acceptance.
The songs on Maloo are inspired by the similarities between the human brain and a computer program, as well as social media’s impact on people’s self-worth and value systems. Maylee Todd’s own experience with mental health informs her art: 2017’s Acts of Love explored the therapeutic uses of psilocybin, and her touring show Virtual Womb.
