Alan Moe Monsarrat, born in Phenix City, AL, 1950. With his father a colonel in the army, he lived in Japan in his teens, playing professionally in rock bands in the early 60’s. After moving back to Texas, his band The Graven Image released their first recording. Moe moved to Hawaii and first learned and performed reggae. Following that stint, he returned to Texas, and moved to Austin, kicking off a 45+ year career of fronting bands, playing bass and singing with Gypsy Eyes, The Lotions (Texas’ first reggae act) and I-Tex. For years, his country band Stop The Truck backed the legendary singer songwriter Freddy Powers. In 2005 he formed The Mau Mau Chaplains, a 10 piece band feat members of Stop The Truck, who have performed weekly for 15 years.
In 2018, Monsarrat was hired to narrate Arrow Films’ documentary, “Texas Welcomes Them Home”, made about the memorial statue erected in honor of the Viet Nam veterans who previously were never honored or recognized by the State of Texas.
Monsarrat’s vinyl album was released in fall 2020 entitled “Agriculture”, performed with his reggae band Music4Life. The title song was made into a video and released on the Reggaeville channel.
