We open on a wide-open Texan landscape, accented by the oppressive presence of polluting, violently churning oil fields. 24-year-old Chynna is being escorted through the drab environment by the contrastingly chipper Birdie – just one member of TheWellness Retreat: a faith-healing group, where Chynna’s breast-cancer stricken mother – Debbie – awaits her daughter’s visit. The group resides on a plot of renovated military housing, hinting at the glossed over decay Chynna expects of its inhabitants. Unexpectedly, Chynna finds everyone on the commune welcoming and kind – but keeps her guard up.
