Indi(e)genous American Musicians

Even as conversations about race representation become more commonplace, there is one minority that is still massively underrepresented in contemporary American music. Oddly, it’s the original Americans themselves. Many other Western countries have done quite a bit to support first nations artists, whether it’s through educational programs or legislative directives. Yet, the US has neither the public funding programs nor the broader cultural awareness that would give Native Americans similar footholds within the wider American music industry. This discussion will highlight US-based Native American musicians that have built their own careers and identify networks that exist to assist the next generation of US-based indigenous creators.
