Using the medium of title design to create a piece that was ultimately about more than just a single film, series, or event, was something Substance had been considering for a long time. When TEDx invited us to design the 2018 titles, it was the perfect opportunity to produce something that would not only satisfy the brief of a title, but continue to remain relevant to a wider audience, speak on a deeply personal level, and ask each of us to consider the hopes and fears we hold for our world. We hope that the titles for Humankind may help kindle this evaluation of our current position on humanity’s short timeline.

What happened to Kelsi Deguire? Who is she? and Where did she vanish? These questions are the running theme in the main title for 'Unspeakable'. The eerily beautiful visuals of wood carving artist Bruno Walpoth serve as a metaphor to the story line itself. Newspaper clippings, archival as well as shot footage and images leave bread crumbs to a plot that is dark, gritty, real but also filled with emotion and empathy. The sequence leaves the viewer wanting more and serves as an introduction to the show itself.

In true Deadpool fashion, he breaks the 4th wall and addresses the audience at various points in the opening titles, all the while stepping through scenarios that boast action and sex appeal, set to Celine Dion’s power ballad “Ashes.” While Deadpool is portrayed in abstract environments, the character himself is photoreal. We helped develop a feature film Deadpool asset, which was then keyframe animated into scenes. Keeping in line with the Bond-esque visual approach, artists employed dynamic light & shadow, and created stylized transitions. The opening sequence went through every department at our studio in NY, our entire team brought something special to the table.

Working with DC, Warner Bros. and director James Wan, Filmograph created a sequence that takes the viewer on a travelogue journey from Aquaman’s coastal lighthouse home to the epic battle for ruler of the underwater kingdoms. From the bright, bioluminescent colors of Atlantis to the high contrast lava-like palette of the Brine Kingdom, we feel the rich, vibrant textures of the world our characters inhabit. A range of cartographic, compass-based designs were incorporated into the sequence to emphasize the kingdoms' ancient past. These, combined with meticulously-crafted frozen moments – as if suspended underwater – allowed us to craft this uniquely engaging cinematic experience.
