We live in a strange moment of declining civic engagement and flourishing participatory culture. The question this session will explore is: How might games and media enable individuals to connect with - and contribute to - the social movements that are working to achieve goals that matter to them? This session will begin with a brief overview of my field research investigating how people in rural Wisconsin discover and choose to participate in social movements, and the roles that media and storytelling play in their decision-making processes. We'll then collectively brainstorm moonshot ideas that leverage games and narrative to profoundly increase participation in social movements.
