Violence is a disease that has spread across the world at an alarming rate as mass shootings occur with horrifying regularity. In the United States, someone is shot every 4 ½ minutes and gun homicide rates are more than 25 times higher than in other high-income countries. We will draw directly from individuals’ experiences from a Level 1 Trauma Center to discuss how violence changes the lives of the victims, their families, the community, the first responders and health care workers that endeavor to save them. We will engage our audience with immersive storytelling, share the design principles we have developed to meet these individuals’ needs and discuss where technology can play a role in addressing this problem. We’ll probably also share a few tears…but how could we not?
