Texas has an unmatched reputation as a tough on crime state. Less well known: the state is the site of one of the most robust grassroots justice-reform movements in the nation. The Reasonably Suspicious podcast is a reform-minded monthly foray into criminal-justice policy and politics in the Lone Star State. It's co-hosted by Scott Henson, a long-time reformer who blogs at gritsforbreakast.org, and Amanda Marzullo, who is the executive director at the Texas Defender Service, a nonprofit that represents clients on Texas death row. This month, the Texas Legislature’s bill filing deadline has just passed. Legislation has been filed to reform the bail system, stop executing the mentally ill, reduce marijuana penalties, end arrests for traffic-ticket debt, and much more. Scott and Mandy review reform legislation filed in 2019 and discuss prospects for key bills. If you’re not listening, you don’t know Texas justice.
