Biotech and the Megacity
In a rapidly urbanizing world, water and waste management is a key challenge facing all cities. More than 80 per cent of wastewater resulting from human activities is discharged into rivers or sea without any pollution removal.
New advances in biotechnology offer environmentally friendly solutions. Beneficial microbes can clean wastewater for recycling and extract scarce resources such as phosphorous. Enzymes can help extract energy and generate value from municipal waste.
