We created this two and a half minute opening sequence for Colin Trevorrow's Focus Feature release, Book of Henry. The sequence animates the contents of Henry's journal, and in doing so, illustrates the inner-workings of this child genius' mind. Working closely with Mr. Trevorrow himself, we utilized a combination of 3D and hand illustration, capturing the pen strokes of our artists and projecting them onto paper texture within a 3D book. OFFF Barcelona Main Titles by Vallee Duhamel tells the surreal stories of characters moving around in the same space in a complex choreography of interlaced paths. The tight human pattern they weave often comes really close to overlapping, yet they remain invisible to one another. An hommage to Oscar-winning 1982 film "Tango" by Zbigniew Rybszynski. Main titles for the feature documentary Paa Joe & The Lion, a true story about the art of love and death. Textural, hand drawn frames reflect the hand made nature of Ghana’s very own fantasy coffin, showing the measuring, sawing, construction, artistry and painting alongside Paa Joe & Jacob's journey both geographically and spiritually. The treatment for the titles used the seven steps of alchemical transformation as its base, likening the ancient art to the design process itself: a language known and used by those in attendance at 2017’s Semi Permanent. The inspiration for the theme of the title sequence for "Solo" (2017) comes from the film itself, where 4 characters from different walks of life were played by one actor, Dulquer Salmaan. The 4 elements were an integral part of the narrative of the film and emotionally influenced the characters. The characters were also named according to the 4 prevalent avatars of the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva. Using these themes, the title sequence for "Solo" (2017) is a symbolic look at one of the principal deities of Hinduism, Lord Shiva in 4 of his most distinct avatars: Bhoomi (Earth), Agni (Fire), Vaayu (Wind) & Jalam (Water). The SXSW gaming awards have been an amazing opportunity for us to explore and try new things over the last 3 years. This year we started with gaming hardware, added a big slice of NASA space photography, a dash of retro sci-fi book covers, and pinch of Kubrick's 2001. We combined them together into an opening that transports the audience into the world of the SXSW Gaming Awards. The opening titles for the thriller series establishes a nefarious tone, featuring people and objects languishing eerily underwater. Show co-creator and star Tom Hardy, along with the production team, shot and created a rough cut of a fully underwater sequence to which artists applied their craft, blending footage shot from different angles and in varying lighting conditions, composing shots for distinct effect and adding CG bubbles to create elegant transitions. A good TED talk distills large, complicated concepts into short, easily understood presentations - something we see as analogous to the essence of title design. For TEDx Sydney, one of the world's largest TEDx events, Substance director Scott Geersen crafted a sequence that reconstructs the spirit of unconventionality into something simple and playful, elementary but eloquent. A collection of primary shapes (cubes, spheres & pyramids) forms a whimsically educational display, with the object's character manifesting the unconventional through the unexpected, and not simply the contrary. Joyfully toy-like, this echoes the wonder and excitement we often feel when taught by a great TEDx speaker.
