Twist is the project of multi-instrumentalist, producer and frontwoman Laura Hermiston. The shadowy fuzzed-out ‘Spectral’, co-produced by Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck, Dusted), is one of 2016's most solid debuts. The sound touches on minimal, Creation Records-indebted pop gems smothered in dense noise with nods to the 90s. Laura’s dreamy vocals and cohesive vision are vital, singular and refreshing.
Twist has been heavily featured in the press such as SPIN, VICE, Interview, Nylon, Gorilla vs. Bear, She Shreds, Stereogum, Fader. Singles off of ‘Spectral’ have been in high rotation on commercial radio such as Indie 88, The Edge 102.1, CBC and CBC 3, Sirius XMU, and both US and Canadian college radio.
Initially working as a duo with Brian Borcherdt, Hermiston recorded and released a series of singles in late 2014 to widespread recognition. Over the past two years, the project has expanded to include numerous recorded collaborators including Jenny Vee (Lana Del Rey, Courtney Love), and Charles Rowell (Crocodiles), as well as a full touring band to bring the recordings to life: Matt Buckberrough (Invasions, Beds), Patrick Grant (Rogue Tenant), and Sara Fegelman (Bueller). This past summer the four-piece took ‘Spectral’ on a two month North American tour. Upon their return to Toronto, they played a sold out release show, as well as opening for Thee Oh Sees to a sold out Danforth Music Hall.
