There’s a tech boom all around, but low-income areas like the Bronx, 13 miles north of Silicon Alley, rarely reap benefits. Young people drop out of education and employment systems and depend on “the hustle” to get by – creative, quick-turnaround ways to make money.
In the hustle mindset, there’s a wealth of creativity that can evolve into entrepreneurship with the right training. In the Bronx, TechTank is a youth tech education program and incubator that fosters local entrepreneurship and builds connections with near tech hubs.

Deepthi Welaratna leads the team at Thicket Labs. For the last 15 years, she's helped launch products, movements and ventures at the intersection of research, media, design, politics, and technology.
As a consultant providing advising on interactions between markets, policy, and communities, Deepthi has worked on national and global programs and campaigns in the US, across Europe, South America, Haiti, and Uganda. As a researcher, Deepthi has helped create and launch research products and has written about technology, globalization, and complexity. As an entrepreneur, Deepthi has helped launch a privately funded design thinking consultancy and a venture-backed small business technology startup.
Deepthi founded Thicket to develop stronger tools for collaborative problem solving in complex environments.
Deepthi was born in the UK, raised in Silicon Valley, lived in France, and her family is from Sri Lanka. She received her MA in Media Studies from The New School.Hide the rest

Uchenna Moka is a Senior Consultant at ThoughtWorks, Inc and helped launch ThoughtWorks Pan Africa. She has offered information technology expertise in industries such as insurance, mobile, airline, non-profit, construction, and healthcare, to name a few.
Uchenna is a graduate in the field of biomedical engineering from Northwestern University. She has also worked at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine doing diabetes-focused endocrinology research.
Along with bringing BlackGirlsCODE Johannesburg and CodedInBraam capacity building initiatives to South Africa, Uchenna was the Professional Services Manager of ThoughtWorks Pan Africa. She has recently moved back to America to continue her journey in professional services.Hide the rest
