The very nature of reality is about to change. Augmented reality devices will soon be capable of erasing the line between human perception & digital presentation; rendered against the canvas of my consciousness—borderless, pervasive, ubiquitous interfaces that could alter my view of the world, what it means, & who brings it to me. This is a profound human-centered design challenge, with the potential to impact behavior, society & culture. This talk outlines the ethical imperative of applying outcomes-based thinking to augmented reality and draws from from multiple domains of knowledge, to present a new set of design principles capable of guiding the future of AR design.

In my career I have been fortunate to work across many disciplines that map to the remarkable evolution and impact of design over the past two decades. Along the way I have worked with and learned from some of the most talented people in the world, and collaborated with a long list of exceptional clients and organizations, including Corona, HP, Hyundai, JP Morgan Chase, Madison Square Garden, Nike, Pepsico and Target among many others.
My areas of expertise include brand experience strategy and design, design thinking, product and service innovation, and UX—applied to emerging technologies in domains like automotive, augmented reality, and financial services. My writing has appeared in DMI Review, Fast Company, and frog’s DesignMind. In March, 2016 I will be speaking about UX for autonomous vehicles at IXDA 16 in Helsinki, followed by a talk at SXSW 2016 in Austin, where I will discuss UX principles for augmented reality. I am currently writing a book about Design Strategy.
At Artefact I lead the strategy practice, and am responsible for developing and evolving the offering to meet the needs of a changing world. As a member of the executive team, I contribute to the day-to-day leadership of the business, which includes business development, strategic planning, offerings, and recruiting. Prior to my current role, I was Executive Creative Director at frog—a global strategy and design company—where I led the Seattle studio and helped establish and lead the brand discipline worldwide.Hide the rest
