Vulkano are an explosive duo from Stockholm pushing post-punk forward in their own charming way. Vulkano are made up of the constantly headbanging Lisa Pyk-Wirström (keyboards/percussion) and the tour de force, the hissing feline Cissi Efraimsson (standing up drums/lead vocals). Vulkano want to explore the realms of art, music, film, fashion and performance.
Since erupting onto the scene, the band attracted a variety of attention when they performed across the UK supporting Kate Nash. They have also toured in countries like Sweden, Norway, Ireland, England, Austria, Finland, Scotland, USA, and Italy. Alongside this, they wrote and directed their own psychedelic short film in their Swedish hometown entitled Neptune Moon. Right now they are working on their next short film that will go with the third album both theme wise and as soundtrack.
Vulkano’s live show is a hard, tight, and raw sweaty female power unto itself. The girls do have a whole special magical atmosphere surrounding them. If Vulkano would be a taste it would be sugary cherry candy.
In the third soon to come album, Vulkano’s getting's personal. Their unique way to balance heartbreaking dark lyrics with uptempo beats and glittery sing along choruses is spellbinding. It’s a very visual album. Cissi the primer songwriter of the band explains she wants the listener to see the stories she’s telling. Every song is lika a short movie and the lyrics gives clues of the scenery, the smells and the tastes which drags you straight into the story. The band went to record in a 70’s wooden studio in the middle of the forest on the Swedish countryside. It a very special place to be and it’s like the mystery and the magic from the nature was caught on tape. Post-punk when it’s at it’s best, influenced by African rhythms, 80’s and 90’s hit music, Middle eastern melodies and Lisa experimenting with analog synths. Vulkano has created a new beautiful, unearthly sound landscape impossible to resist
Vulkano’s debut album Live wild die free is a mix of songs that aren’t for the faint hearted with the band’s full throttle sound paving the way. Uncompromising, extrovert and maximalist, whether this be in the monkey-like sounds in ‘In The Jungle’ or the more accessible electronic drones of ‘Choir of Wolves’, it is sure that this is a captivating band that are worthy of your attention.
On their second album, Iridescence, Vulkano changes character, but the band keeps its melodic alchemy. Iridescence has a more Nordic electronica-pop sound to it with lyrics bordering between the sharply insightful and the bewilderingly free. Softly inviting and darkly swaying tones, all towards an existential light.
They were also the subject of a Swedish Film Council funded Documentary film entitled “All We Have Is Now". Winner of the Swedish Guldbagge award, actress Alexandra Dahlström makes her directorial debut with an intimate documentary on how to start a punk band in the 2010’s that is big on heart. It premiered on Swedish TV in August 2015 and in NYC as part of the Rooftop Films festival in August last year.
