joshua black wilkins music biography 2015
joshua black wilkins is an alt. country, Americana, roots rock, singer- songwriter, artist of noir.
Although joshua moved to nashville in 2002 with a built-in rock-a-billy band and a following, he spent 2 1/2 years proving to himself, and the east nashville population, that he wanted to make serious records. He quickly started playing mainstream clubs, and toured solo to demonstrate the variety of Nashville’s (then) unheard-of musical qualities.
He was signed to Angryson Records in 2004 and released Hellbent and Brokenhearted on that label. Although Angryson Records was not equipped with big budget publicists, joshua was able to make a new name for himself as an artist of “bastard” proportions. joshua black wilkins is an alt. country, Americana, roots rock, singer- songwriter, artist of noir.
The title “Nashville’s Alt Country Bastard” was quickly used to support the fact that joshua’s style of songwriting and performance was not a one-sided, single genre entity. Angryson Records also released the EP Pretty As A Junkyard.
2010 brought the long awaited release of While You Wait. Along with his band, The Forty Volts, joshua created the perfect combination of his influences. Produced by Mark Robertson (Th’ Legendary ShackShakers, Matthew Ryan), joshua took 22 new songs, and a few of his earliest compositions, and compiled a record that has brought the ears of new listeners on their edge.
The Girlfriend Sessions was released in the fall of 2011. A collection of solo material that had traveled well since the release of While You Wait. Recorded in East Nashville on tape on one Sunday afternoon, The Girlfriend Sessions was the next bridge into joshua black wilkins’ trademark growl and grit.
2012 wrote itself into the newest record, Fair Weather (released January 2013) and the release of the 7” vinyl, I Tremble/Western (released in september 2012).
2014 brings the release of Settling The Dust, a new “East Nashville Country” record compiled of several songs from The Girlfriend Sessions as well as many new and refined songs. Recorded in one weekend on 2” tape at Fry Pharmacy Recording Studios. Settling The Dust was release on CD/digitally in Sept 2014 and on vinyl in November.
Although he is seated in the roots/americana world of what is NOT pop country music, joshua black wilkins is just as inspired by 90's grunge music as well as the haunting sounds of Tom Waits, the iconic swell of Bruce Springsteen and the fever of rebellion in Johnny Cash.
