His biggest contribution to hip hop culture outside of his music is Paid Dues, an independent hip hop festival he founded with Guerilla Union in 2005. From its humble beginnings of one stage, 12 acts, and 3500 attendees, to 2013’s festival which boasted 3 stages, over 40 acts and 27,000 in attendance. The festival has grown in attendance every year and has been profitable every year since its inception. Paid Dues leads the way for him to musically connect with new and untapped talent. Outside of hip-hop, Murs has starred in and produced 3 short films. He’s just recently finished shooting his first feature film, Maul Dawgs. He co-wrote, executive produced, and starred in this PG rated comedy with supporting talent /artists Tabi Bonney and Dee-1. MURS signed a new recording deal with independent powerhouse label Strange Music in January 2014. He’s currently in the process of recording his long-awaited solo project “Love & Rockets 2” expected to be released in spring 2015.
Through the years MURS has maintained a theme of positivity, peace, and love in his music. In the past decade that message has been brought to life through his various philanthropic efforts. He has worked with Habitat For Humanity, Ordinary Hero and Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) to name just a few. He not only gives financial support, he makes time annually to be hands-on with most of these organizations. Whether it’s getting together with his fans to build a home for a family in need, being a camp counselor for teens with autism, or making a mission trip to Ethiopia, MURS makes a continued effort to shirk the negative stigmas of greed and violence that surround most rappers. He and his wife recently became parents of two boys via separate adoptions. Now having the family and solid foundation he’s always dreamed of MURS is looking to expanding his empire. His number one focus is his music solo career and filmmaking.
