In the past, adoption of new technologies in the automotive sector was a 5+ year development cycle. Safety, reliability and full system integration required years of development followed by at least two years of testing to ensure that the new technology was robust. As new electronic systems have become more reliable and can comprehend extreme operating conditions, software development systems have become more robust and new modular platforms have become the norm. Partially because the development environment for the integration of new technologies has become more mature and also because the automotive world has moved to platforms, the floodgates have opened to rolling out consumer facing technologies at a faster pace. In addition, overall systems are now able to communicate with each other in real time, opening a whole new area of growth.
