Fostering Digital Literacy in the Developing World

As the digital world continues to transcend economic and social boundaries, an unexpected technology has emerged as a tool of empowerment and protection for women around the globe. Bitcoin, which has steadily been gaining traction in the mainstream banking industry, is a powerful and effective form of digital currency in developing nations. Through the nonprofit Digital Citizen Fund, women are utilizing Bitcoin to financially support their families and overcome obstacles such as access to bank accounts and high transaction fees.
As a gender-neutral currency, Bitcoin is redefining the world’s financial infrastructure. Our panel will discuss the ways in which digital literacy fosters entrepreneurship and financial independence, the value of digital creative expression, and how digital currency is leveraged to empower women in the developing world.

Joyce Kim is currently the the Executive Director of the new Stellar Development Foundation in SF. Funded by Stripe, Stellar (like Bitcoin) is a decentralized payment network; unlike Bitcoin, it supports transactions in arbitrary currencies.
She is also a Capital Advisor at the VC firm Freestyle, with an interest in investing in crypto-currency companies. Previously she co-founded Soompi in 2006, which was acquired in 2011 and went on to found SimpleHoney which was acquired by payment company OpenCoin.Hide the rest

In her role as CEO of The Barbarian Group, Sophie oversees all client business, agency operations and growth, and has played an instrumental role in strategically building the agency’s executive leadership team. Over the course of her tenure, the agency has added several major accounts to its existing client roster, including Pepsi, Virgin and most recently, Beam Spirits.
Prior, Sophie served as Managing Director of StrawberryFrog, where she was responsible for leading the growth of new and existing clients including Jim Beam, Sabra and P&G. Previously, she acted as Global Business Director at JWT.
Sophie currently sits on the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s (IAB) agency advisory board and has advised the Effies in planning and insights. In addition, she serves as an advisory board member to nonprofit ‘Projects For All’ and mentor for Women’s Annex Foundation, where she is heavily involved in implementing digital initiatives in developing nations.Hide the rest
