Drones Take Flight: Are They Ready for Prime Time?
Smaller, quicker, and smarter than ever, drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV for short), are taking off. From toys to tools, makers around the world are pushing the envelope with drones and the applications are getting more interesting and fantastical, e.g. will Amazon really deliver products with drones; will drones replace the familiar pizza delivery car in your neighborhood? Drones have been spotted at major sporting and concert events like Coachella, and were buzzing around Lake Tahoe over July 4th. Fun to speculate and imagine, but as drones become more pervasive, questions about airspace regulations, pending violations and court cases make headlines. So who needs to weigh in on the security and privacy issues that still need to be resolved to allow hobbyists their fun, and serious commercial ventures their freedom to design new models for innovative applications?
