The Launderettes

The Norwegian all-girl garage band is out with their new album GETAWAY - on Steven Van Zandts Wicked Cool Records. The band has released several albums, played more than 250 shows in Europe and USA and had their music featured in film, TV-series and commercials (ex. Nike). They will perform their new single "Hot Rocks" on the tv-show Lilyhammer on Netflix.

Steven Van Zandt has been a fan of The Launderettes for years, playing the band regularly on his internationally syndicated radio show The Underground Garage. For GETAWAY, Van Zandt has already picked four “Coolest Songs In The World” dating back to 2012, so there has been immense radio support in preparation of this release. GETAWAY will also be the record labels #1 priority for licensing in the next months.

In 2007, Van Zandt put together a compilation album of his favorite Launderettes tracks called FLUFF ‘N’ FOLD, and the response in the U.S. was outstanding. The band’s music has been featured worldwide in commercials (Nike), TV (Camp, MTV), and film (Switched at Birth). Meanwhile, having played over 250 shows, The Launderettes continue to make fans on the road, including opportunities at gigs hosted by Van Zandt, like the stage at Hard Rock Calling (Hyde Park, London, 2011 & 2012).

The four Coolest Songs from GETAWAY have also been released as 7”, and they have been sold at Launderettes shows and in select shops for the past 12-18 months. The fifth single from GETAWAY (“Hot Rocks”) will be performed by The Launderettes on Lilyhammer (the Netflix TV show that will be showed in 130 countries). Lilyhammer stars Van Zandt, and The Launderettes prominent inclusion will kick off the 2nd season. Meanwhile, like the other Coolest Songs, “Hot Rocks” will receive eight weeks of highly visible support on The Underground Garage (which is heard on Sirius-XM and terrestrial radio, and has more than 1.2 million listeners worldwide).

GETAWAY is inspired by the hardboiled pulp novel The Killer Inside Me (1952) by Jim Thompson. The protagonist of the novel gets away with living a double life as a serial killer, and the book has developed a cult following because the story is told through the eyes of a twisted, sadistic psychopath. Musically, The Launderettes journey to end the story positively means roads of groovy garage rock, catchy powerpop and high energy rock’n’roll.

GETAWAY reflects the richly diverse music scene in Scandinavia. The Launderettes’ frosty sound and blue lyrics, united with their producer (Cato Thomassen from Madrugada/ Cato Salsa Experience) soft sonic platform gives a new and exciting twist to the Nordic noir sound. The album may bring comparisons to Scandinavian bands like The Hives, The Cardigans, and Soundtrack of Our Lives. At the same time the songs are indebted to historic influences like The Zombies, The Kinks, and The Easybeats, as well as The Stooges and MC5.

While recording, the band has brought their own personal musical heritage and fused it into a contemporary sound. So the result of the collaboration is a new interpretation of The Launderettes sixties sound, stretching far beyond the familiar garage rock genre.

The band just got back from a tour in Spain, and they will continue rigorous gigging in Norway during winter 2014. The planning has already begun for spring tours of France and Germany, followed by summer festivals in Scandinavia.
