Trinidad Jame$
At the fresh age of 25, Trinidad Jame$, born Nicholaus Williams, is arguably the
hottest commodity in hip-‐hop right now. The combination of his witty lyrical
skill, infectious sound and larger than life persona, has set him apart from
hip-‐hop’s current run of the mill emcees.
Hailing from humble beginnings in the Port of Spain (Trinidad & Tobago), Jame$
was raised in a single parent home by his mother, departing from his native
country at the young age of eight. Jame$ and his mother migrated to the states
briefly living in New York and Florida until finally settling in Atlanta,
Georgia where he currently calls home.
Adapting to the many different cultures in the US while still embodying the
essence of his island roots was, initially, not easy for Jame$ growing up.
Always feeling different from his peers, Jame$ became comfortable with not
fitting in and began embracing the unique characteristics that eventually caught
the world’s attention and made him a standout star.
“The first time I recorded music was in November of 2011,” recounts Jame$, “I’d
be chilling with the boys and a beat would come on and we’d freestyle to it,
just messing around. ”
Jame$ quickly pursued rapping a couple of months later; fueled with a goal to
create a sound that best showcased his unique style and personality, Jame$ began
working on the project that would change the course of his life.
“I thought about it like, I’m going to do music, but I’m going to do it my way.
I’m going to do it by myself. If I fail, I can just blame myself”, explains
Jame$.
In an unconventional approach, Jame$ began scouring the Internet for free beats.
Soon after Jame$ recruited engineer Justin Pardon, and went on to record a 10
track project he titled Don’t Be S.A.F.E (Sensitive As Fuck Everyday).
Immediately following the completion of his project, Jame$ signed with Atlanta
based independent label T.I.G Entertainment (Think Its A Game). Enlisting the
support of manager DJ Dirrty aka JDirrt and T.I.G label head Girvan “Fly” Henry,
Jame$ dropped Don’t Be S.A.F.E in the fall of 2012.
In tandem with Don’t Be S.A.F.E, the video for the project’s lead single “All
Gold Everything” was released, baring striking visuals to accompany the standout
track. “All Gold Everything” became an overnight viral phenomenon, instantly
putting Jame$ in high demand.
An intense bidding war ensued, culminating in Jame$ inking an exclusive deal
with the iconic Def Jam Records -‐which includes a joint Gold Gang Records
venture.
In less than 10 weeks, the buzzworthy “All Gold Everything” catapulted to the
top of everyone’s playlist, impressively reaching top 5 at urban mainstream
radio. The record won big across various platforms, also garnering an undeniable
online presence with over 15 million total combined postings, and 9.6 million
VEVO views. Re-‐released through Def Jam, Don’t Be S.A.F.E earned Jame$ his
first gold single with “All Gold Everything” selling over 500,000 copies.
Having accomplished what would be perceived as the unimaginable in less than a
year, Jame$ shows no signs of slowing down; with countless sold-‐out shows,
accolades and an ever-‐growing fan base, Jame$ remains humble and driven.
“I don’t think I’ve made it yet,” Jame$ tells Billboard Magazine, “I’m gonna
continue to do me -‐-‐ the same thing that got me to where I’m at right now”
