DJ Buddha
Born in Tehran, Iran, DJ Buddha became a political refugee before he reached elementary school. When the dust settled from the Islamic Revolution taking place in his native country at the time, DJ Buddha and his family had relocated to Missouri City, Texas. He grew up on the stylings of Houston hip-hop royalty, in a time when the likes of the Geto Boys and UGK ruled the city’s radio airwaves. Over the years, what started as a pastime turned into a passion; that passion would ultimately be refined into the skills that propelled DJ Buddha into his current tastemaker status. There's a clear line in the sand separating those for whom music is merely a hobby, and those who live and breathe in the beat. DJ Buddha is, without a doubt, team captain of the latter.
By the time the rest of the country had only just begun to give props to Houston hip-hop in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, DJ Buddha’s generation had been raised on their hometown’s signature style of beats and rhymes. The undisputed father of the Bayou City’s “screwed-up” sound was Robert Earl Davis, better known by his moniker, DJ Screw. DJ Buddha counts the late legend as one of his influences and is himself now known for his “slowed and chopped” style, paying homage to DJ Screw every time he touches the turntables.
While most of the players from that golden era of Houston hip-hop have faded to almost black, DJ Buddha remains a relevant and essential cog in the city’s hip-hop wheel. His insatiable work ethic and undeniable knack for his craft have quickly gained him fans and respect nationwide. Not only does he show and prove as one of Houston’s most deft DJ’s and executive producers, he possesses the drive and determination it takes to be successful in the music business. He has released over 40 mixtapes independently, securing his standing as one of the most hard-working and respected selectors on the Third Coast.
Easily the king of the scene in the Lone Star state, DJ Buddha serves up audible treats to hungry crowds. Simply put, he packs houses and keeps crowds moving like the pistons of a well-oiled engine. The scene (or the city, for that matter) wouldn’t be the same without him. As an executive producer, he is a true music lover’s music lover, with hip-hop clearly flowing through his veins. Whether locked away in the studio or rocking the turntables, DJ Buddha flawlessly executes his musical duality with the same amount of verve and finesse as would an industry veteran far beyond his years.
As any true fan knows, there is much more to hip-hop than simply music. The music is an inextricable element of a bona fide cultural phenomenon. From graffiti, to dance, to fashion, hip-hop encompasses artistic expression in all its colors. In 2002, DJ Buddha joined forces with childhood friend DJ Flea to form Stickygreen Productions as an outlet for their music, alongside a clothing line collaboration with the well-established Algierz fashion line, influenced by their music and made for, as their mantra states, “the people who like their music slow.” The past decade has seen Stickygreen Productions grow into one of the most successful independent ventures of its kind.
DJ Buddha and Stickygreen Productions have collaborated with countless notables from the Who’s Who in Houston Music and beyond, and have been sought out to rock stages from SXSW to Rock the Bells and countless others in between. To date, they have appeared as DJ or executive producer on projects for numerous artists on both local and national levels, including: Devin the Dude, Shyne Po, Mistah Fab, Short Dawg, Jackie Chain, Paul Wall, Skeme, Baby Bash and Slim Thug. DJ Buddha is affiliated with Houston Hip-Hop pioneers, the Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.), and is the official DJ for Dat Boi T (S.U.C.) and Stockz (OTOS Fam).
