The Creases
Tucked away in the streets of East Brisbane Australia is a rickety old share house resting on stumps and oozing with character. It is haunted with the ghosts of parties past; with paint stripped walls covered in old and new posters, and pen scrawled furniture that nobody knows the origin of. It’s in this house that you will find The Creases.
Made up of songwriters Joe Agius and Jarrod Mahon, the Brisbane two-piece live together, and create together. With what started off as a random drunken rainy friday night of recording, The Creases created ‘Fun To Lose’ and with a instant wide appraisal among the tight Brisbane music community, a week later recorded ‘I Won’t Wait’ in the same old basement and same one night manor. These first two DIY songs has in essence become an organic result of what happens when poverty breeds creativity. It’s this irony that has shaped the personality of their music and also what’s grabbed people’s attention.
It’s not everyday an email drops into your inbox from Rough Trade UK saying they want to release your song ‘I Won’t Wait’ on 7” vinyl. But this is what happened before the band had even played one show. Quickly following that they were picked up to support Peace (UK) and The Preatures in Brisbane, and scored a slot on the entire Jungle Giants Australian album tour. Still – having not played once.
They are some pretty big expectations for a band like The Creases. For a band with dudes as casual as the next guy, that buy and sell random junk just to pay the rent and get by. Thankfully they’ve had a little help from their friends with two extra members joining the team, bass player Aimon Clark and drummer Bridie McQueenie, to really bring their live show together.
With their full band on board, The Creases did eventually get to that first show. But far from the haphazardness of they came to be, the live show is truly where the extent of their talent gets realized. Having been in other flourishing Brisbane bands such as Emerson Snowe (Mahon) and RINSE (Agius), they are both no strangers to the stage. They play with a tightness that is not over produced but rather natural, like they’ve been doing it for years. Punters that witnessed this first show realized this band will be more than just one song and a bit of buzz. There are more songs from where ‘I Won’t Wait’ came from and it’s only a matter of time before The Creases… unfold.
