Mary Henige, APR has held many communications positions in her nearly 28 years with General Motors. In her current role as director, social media, digital communications, research and reputation management, she leads GM’s social media strategy, employee policy and training; blogs; community engagement on GM’s corporate brand channels; and crisis monitoring and response. Her team works in cooperation with other areas to broaden the reach of GM’s “stories” including video production and media outreach.
Additionally, Henige oversees GM’s creative interactive and user experience team who develop and support the company’s global intranet and external websites and channels such as the media site, corporate blogs and retiree website.
She received a bachelor's degree in speech communication and public relations, and a master's degree in organizational communication and public relations, both from Wayne State University (WSU), in 1986 and 1993, respectively.
Henige enjoys working with and mentoring students and new professionals. She has recruited and trained interns for many years. In 2005, she began overseeing General Motors’ internship program. She has been the professional advisor to WSU’s PRSSA Chapter since 1993. In 2005 she became chair of Wayne State University’s Department of Communication PR Advisory Board. Henige has taught introductory public relations courses at Wayne State, and has been a guest lecturer at many universities.
